Starting over at a new school can be fun, crazy, and scary especially if you don’t know anyone there and if you do, you might not be the closest of friends. For many, the next two weeks will be the first day as a freshman or at a whole new college that you might have transferred to. I’ll be starting my senior year in a couple of weeks so believe me I know the feeling that many of you must be going through right now.

My first year at a four-year college was not the best, I wish someone would have told me what to expect and give me some tips to follow to make the most of it. So, I have come up with some tips to make sure you make friends your first semester of college that can possibly last you a lifetime. So, let’s get started!!

1. Join Your School Facebook Group

At least all schools have a facebook group that you can join to get to know other students in your year before you start school. They are also very helpful when you want to link up with other students the weekend before classes start. At my school, we have a welcome weekend event the weekend before classes start so you can go and join groups and organizations. I highly recommend that everyone attends so they can see all that the school has available. A lot of people ask on the facebook group if anyone wants to go with them. Go! They might not be your friend forever but you will have fun experiencing it with someone.

2. Go to Your Welcome Weekend Events

If your school has this, then go! They inform you about what the school offers and events for your class year to do, so that you can all get to know each other. If you can’t find someone to go with ask your roommate or someone in your building that you see. People most likely won’t say no if they are already going and everyone is feeling nervous even if they appear not to be, believe me!

3. Sign up for Groups/Organizations

Sign-up for as many groups that interest you even if the people you are with don’t. When you sign up for groups make sure you attend at least one of their meetings to see if the group or organization is a right fit. You can go alone because a lot of people do and if you go alone because you don’t have a choice, you will make friends there once you start talking to other students. FYI, some groups you might have to pay to join. The groups I joined at my school cost between $5-$20, but a lot of groups and organizations are free. You mainly pay to get emails or get information before they post about it.

4. Go to Parties (if you want to)

People are always having parties the weekend before school starts or the weekend after the first week of classes. You don’t have to go to parties, but if you are one that enjoys parties you should find some people to go with. Always bring a friend with you to make sure you are safe and have someone to depend on while there. Come up with a secret phrase or something so that they and you know when to step in when one of you feels uncomfortable. Keep an eye on each other, it's important!

5. Sit Next to People in Class

When nervous or scared people tend to sit alone in the back and don’t end up making friends in class. Even if you don’t know anyone, sit close to people, and interact with them and the teacher. You will learn better and make friends in class.

6. Compliment Another Student

It’s always nice to get and give someone a compliment, and a great way to make friends. Even when I’m nervous whenever I see someone with cute shoes I tell them, and ask them where they got them. It’s a great conversation starter. You can also say something about a class you might have together to start up a conversation. I sometimes ask a question to someone even if I know the answer just to start a conversation and/or have someone to go to if I have a real question and need help with something later in class.

I hope these tips can help you make friends this upcoming school year, to make friends out of class or anyone that may attend your school.
